Instructions for the Kentucky Butter Cake:

  • Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Grease and flour a bundt pan or use my homemade cake pan release.

  • Use a stand mixer, fitted with the paddle attachment, to cream 2 sticks of softened unsalted butter and 2 cups of granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 5 minutes on medium).

  • Add the 4 eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in 1 Tablespoon a good quality vanilla extract.

  • Use my Foolproof Way to Measure Flour to measure 3 cups of flour. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with 1 cup of room temperature buttermilk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Blend until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

  • Pour the batter into the prepared 10-cup bundt pan and smooth the top. Tap the pan on the counter a few times to release any air bubbles.

  • Bake for 60-70 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  • While the cake is still warm, prepare the butter sauce.

I used 6-inch bundt pans lined with my homemade cake pan release.

How to Make the Butter Sauce:

  • In a saucepan, melt 1 stick of unsalted butter over medium heat. Stir in 1 cup granulated sugar, 2 Tablespoons water, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring constantly.

  • Once the cake is done, while it’s still in the pan, poke the bottom with a skewer or fork.

  • Pour the butter sauce over the bottom of the warm cake, allowing it to soak in. Let the cake cool completely in the pan before removing.
