How To Make Bourbon Pecan Pie

Equipment Needed:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dark brown sugar

  • 6 TBS butter (softened)

  • 3 eggs (beaten)

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 3/4 cup dark corn syrup

  • 1 TBS cornstarch

  • 2 TBS bourbon

  • 1 ½ cups pecans (chopped)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat and Prep: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the unbaked pie crust in a 9-inch-deep dish pie pan and set aside.

  2. Mix the Sweetness: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the softened butter and dark brown sugar until well combined. This will form the sweet, gooey base of your pie.

  3. Add the Essentials: To the butter and sugar mixture, add the beaten eggs, vanilla extract, dark corn syrup, cornstarch, and the star of the show – the bourbon. Blend everything together until it forms a smooth, luscious mixture.

  4. Layer with Pecans: Spread the chopped pecans evenly over the bottom of the unbaked pie crust. This nutty layer adds a delightful crunch and a taste of the South to your pie.

  5. Pour and Bake: Gently pour the pie mixture over the pecans, ensuring it's evenly distributed. Place your crust protector over the edges of the pie, then place in a preheated oven. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes or until the center appears barely set.

  6. Golden Crust: To achieve a golden, glossy finish on your pie crust, remove the pie crust protector and brush it lightly with an egg wash when the pie is almost done baking. Then return it to the oven for a final touch of perfection.

  7. Cool and Tempt: Once your Bourbon Pecan Pie is out of the oven, allow it to cool to room temperature on a wire cooling rack. For an extra kick of bourbon flavor, you can even brush a little more bourbon over the top while it's fresh out of the oven if you're feeling a bit naughty!

How Does a Pie Crust Protector Work?

A pie crust protector, sometimes called a pie shield, is a handy kitchen tool designed to prevent the edges of your pie crust from over-browning or burning while the filling cooks. Here's how it works and how you can use one for your Bourbon Pecan Pie recipe:

  • A pie crust protector is typically made of heat-resistant material, such as silicone or aluminum foil.

  • It's shaped like a ring or a shield that fits over the outer edge of your pie crust.

  • When placed on top of your pie, it acts as a barrier to shield the exposed crust from direct heat, allowing the filling to cook evenly without burning the edges.

Using a pie crust protector for your Bourbon Pecan Pie:

  1. After you've prepared your pie crust and filled it with the pecan pie mixture according to the recipe instructions, place the pie crust protector over the unbaked crust.

  2. Ensure that the protector covers the entire edge of the crust, including any decorative edges you may have created.

  3. Once the protector is in place, proceed with baking your pie as directed in the recipe.

  4. The pie crust protector will effectively shield the edges of the crust from excessive heat, preventing them from becoming too dark while the filling sets and bakes.

  5. When the pie is done baking, carefully remove the pie crust protector to reveal a beautifully golden, evenly baked crust.

Using a pie crust protector can help you achieve a pie with perfectly cooked filling and a crust that's just the right shade of golden brown. It's a simple yet effective tool that ensures your Bourbon Pecan Pie looks as good as it tastes!
